As the most popular form of sedation in dentistry, inhalation sedation utilizes nitrous oxide and oxygen to make you more relaxed during your dental appointment.
This type of sedation will cause relaxation while still remaining conscious and responsive. The patient is prescribed an anti-anxiety medication (typically Valium or Halcion) to be taken an hour prior to the appointment.
For this type of sedation the patient receives anxiety-reducing and pain-reducing medications through an IV that is administered and monitored by a certified dental anesthesiologist. Patients typically do not remember the dental appointment and feel that they have been asleep through the treatment.
This type of sedation is ideal for minimizing anxiety, pain, and memory associated with the dental appointment.
