Your Child’s First Visit to the Family Dentist

Seattle family dentist, Dr. Patricia Benca, and our team find that many parents often have lots of questions and concerns when it comes to their child’s first visit with the dentist. While it may seem surprising, it is recommended that children experience their first dental visit sometime before the age of one. Too often, bringing such a young child in for their dental visit often raises more anxiety in the parent than the patient, but in reality, your child’s first visit with the family dentist is nothing Seattle patients should feel worried about.

During the first visit, you’ll learn about prevention and taking care of your child’s teeth. Often, your child’s diet, use of fluoride, or oral habits such as pacifier use or thumb-sucking might be discussed. Your dentist will check for cavities, tooth decay, and other dental problems that can all be easily treated if caught early. If you have any questions or concerns for your dentist, write them down, and be sure to ask him or her.

Another goal during the first visit is to familiarize your child with the dental chair. If their first experience with their family dentist involves pain or difficult procedures, the image can easily stick with them and cause dental anxiety down the road. If possible, you may consider scheduling your own cleaning appointment right before your child’s; they will feel a lot more confident if they are able to follow your lead and see that there is really nothing to be afraid of.

Children are naturally born with beautiful teeth, and we want to help them stay that way. If you are currently looking for a family dentist in the Seattle area, contact our office for an appointment today. We look forward to helping you and your family with all of your dental needs!
